Welcome to Ghana Harvest

The Lord is doing great things here, and we pray that He continues to bless our ministry in West Africa.

Many of God’s children are working in West Africa to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to people who do not know Him. Through our ministry at Ghana Harvest, we train up church leaders, plant new churches, translate Scripture and other important books, teach the local people to read and write, provide education for children, and support their physical needs such as access to clean water.

I come from Ziako - a village near Bawku in the northeast of Ghana, West Africa. I am married to Cynthia and we are blessed with five children (three girls and two boys), all living in Ghana. In our communitarian culture, living in an extended family system is a way of life, and accordingly my family also includes several nephews and nieces…

MEET

Pastor Nicholas Salifu

I was not born a Christian, for my parents were animists or nature worshippers. They worshipped and made sacrifices of chicken, goats, donkeys and even cows to divinities such as rivers, stones, trees, mountains, lakes and our ancestors. When my father realized that his fortune was getting exhausted because of the persistent sacrifices of his flock, he converted to Islam, believing that he had finally accepted a God that was both powerful and did not seek perennial favors. No sooner had I become a Muslim than I realized that Islam, after all was not a “liberating” or “transformational experience for me. I found Islam to be more difficult to follow than my previous traditional religion. I was forced to pray five times a day and memorize Qu’ranic passages even though I never understood the Arabic content. Moreover, bodily demands such as fasting one month a year from dawn to dusk seemed an obligation that was no different from the favors that the traditional religion gods sought from me. As an obedient son, however, I continued living the life of a Muslim that was decided for me by my father.

After receiving the rare blessing of an education, I went to work in the the port city of Tema where I met the LCMS missionary Rev. Walter Schmidt. He introduced me to the Gospel, which was a transformational moment for me. I came to understand that God in His eternal love had already redeemed me and called me to be His child; and that it was not my favors, discipline, and reciting verses that made me a “Christian,” but that it was completely reconciliation brought forth by the grace of God. I readily enrolled in the pre-baptism class and read the Bible for myself. The Holy Spirit brought me to faith and I was baptized and confirmed…

His Story

  • Education

Thereafter, God led me to many roles in ministry. I enrolled in the first Theological Education by Extension class organized by Pastor Schmidt, and served in the church in various roles. I Established a preaching station in the community (Nungua) where I lived and eventually went back to my hometown where there were no Christians. God used me to start a church there. It grew rapidly, and our first baptism service had 143 people.

My next endeavor was Pastoral Ministry. I attended the Lutheran Seminary in Nigeria in 1990 followed by the University of Ghana and Ghana Institute of Linguistics LIteracy and Bible Translation.

  • Ministries

God has used me to train adults to read and write in my local dialect, and dive in to the Scriptures which have been translated for them to read. I have been blessed to train local leaders to plant churches and have helped establish 25 congregations with over 3000 members. In addition, I have helped start four schools and have been able to further my own training at seminary in the United States.

My duties now include nurturing the local Christians and encouraging their evangelism, training more church leaders, establishing new congregations, translating materials, teaching members to read and write, and assisting with social issues to meet the needs of the local people

  • The harvest is ripe, and the Lord needs more workers.
